New WordPress

Hmm… looks like the new version of WordPress has borked a few things.  Tags == good.  Converting categories into tags then deleting the categories == bad.

Tweaking the blog

Published on September 14, 2007 by in Blogging

Emily’s in Chicago until Sunday, so I’m having to entertain myself. I’ve made a few changes to the site today, namely a new template for the blog. Hit refresh on your browser a few times, and the banner image up top will change.

"The 10-Megabyte Computer System, Only $5995"

“Sometimes we have to take a look back to really appreciate the technology we have now, especially since “the 10-Megabyte Computer System” cost a whopping $5995 at one time. Thanks everyone for sending in the pictures. First picture in gallery.”

One of the ads in this feature is for the Timex Sinclair, which I had briefly – a $99 computer was a pretty good deal back 25 years ago, though it was terribly crippled, even by 1982 standards.

MoveOn.org Gets Discount Rate for ‘Betray Us’ Advocacy Ad

Despite claims of “journalistic integrity”, the fact is that media bias is a reality. You just wouldn’t think an entity as large as the New York Times would be so blatant about it:

Jake Tapper at ABC News reported that MoveOn.org paid $65,000 for its full page anti-war advocacy sliming of General David Petraeus. This figure raised the suspicions of attentive blogger Confederate Yankee whose intuition appears to be correct. While looking up the current New York Times rate book he discovered that MoveOn.org received a $102,000 discount on the standard political advocacy rate that is advertised at $167,157.

For a newspaper that pretends to be objective purveyors of news this discount seems a bit steep for the deep pocketed liberal advocacy group. In fact the amount MoveOn paid is less than any rate listed in the New York Times schedule.

Purdue researchers develop technology to detect cancer by scanning surface veins

Published on September 6, 2007 by in Cancer

Of course, they discover this *after* I was given a clean bill of health… now if they could just figure out a way to give chemo without needles.

A new technology for cancer detection that eliminates the need for drawing blood has been developed by Purdue University researchers.

Researchers from Purdue’s Cancer Center, Department of Chemistry and Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering collaborated with cancer and biotechnology experts from the Mayo Clinic to develop technology to detect tumor cells within the human body. By shining a laser on surface veins, such as those on the wrist and inside the cheek, researchers are able to reveal and count circulating tumor cells.

Teen nearly kills himself trying to fix overheating Xbox 360

Published on September 5, 2007 by in Gaming, Stupidity

Brevard (NC) – A 14-year-old boy was knocked unconscious and sent to the hospital as a result of trying to cool off his Xbox 360 over the weekend.According to a local news report, the teen’s console would repeatedly shut off every five minutes. His mother told reporters that he thought the problem was likely linked to overheating. He reportedly tried to fix it on his own based on tips he found online.

“When I left to go next door he was playing a game but when I got back he was laying on his back on the floor and unconscious,” said the boy’s mother.

Local media reports suggest that the teenager took the power supply, wrapped it in plastic and tape, and submerged it into a bowl of water while it was still plugged in. This caused an electrical shock and knocked the boy unconscious.

His mother called 911 and paramedics rushed him to Transylvania Community Hospital in Brevard, North Carolina. He spent the night there and was treated for minor burns to his right hand and foot.

Shocking! Hopefully he’s learned what the majority of the world’s population knows – water and electricity don’t mix. Well, they *do* – just not with particularly pleasant results.

A Musical Experiment

Published on August 29, 2007 by in Music

Anyone who’s known me for a few years is aware that I enjoy playing music. For a while there I defined myself as a musician first and foremost. Over the past couple of years though, my guitars have been gathering dust, which is depressing to say the least.

Today I ran across a video of Jonathan Coulton performing “Re: your brains” – a ballad about zombies – at the Penny Arcade Expo this year (see video below). While the video is hilarious, what got me thinking was his “Thing a Week” project – basically, he recorded a new song every week and made the songs available for free on his site. He described it as an attempt to keep the creative juices flowing, which is exactly what I’m lacking at the moment.

So, I thought to myself – why not try the same thing? I don’t think I’m up to recording a song per week, but I could at least *write* a song a week. It doesn’t have to be long, it doesn’t have to be good – it just has to be a song.

We’ll see how it goes – starting Monday :)
